CONGRATULATIONS LIAM
Posted: Friday 6 February 2009
Liam Smith of Swan Hills Swimming Club has just returned with two Silvers and one Bronze medal that he achieved at the Australian Multi-Disability National Age Championships that were held in Canberra. This inaugural multi-disability national swimming event was held in the Australian Institute Of Sport and proved to be a well organised and exciting event.
Liam qualified in five events including the 400m, 100m & 50m freestyle and 100m & 50m backstroke. He swam three personal best times and earned himself three national medals. This result is a testament to Liam’s commitment to his sport, training up to six times each week at the Swan Park Leisure Centre in Midland.
In November 2008, Liam was awarded Western Australia Super Swimming Series Swimmer of the year by Wheelchair Sports at a lavish function that was held in the Scarborough Convention Centre. A month later, Liam swam in the Western Australia Sunsmart State Championships where he brought home gold in almost every event that he competed in.
Truly a very talented and dedicated swimmer, Liam is following in the footsteps of a fellow Swan Hills Swimmer Kingsley Bulgarian who won five Paralympic Gold Medals for Australia. Congratulations Liam and good luck in your future endeavours!

Grant Henry said "I find that mental toughness
is one of the hardest and most challenging aspects for athletes
to develop. Some athletes have it already and some need prompting.
So to see all seven of these athletes over the past four days
grab challenges with both hands makes me particularly proud. Well
done again to all seven swimmers, you have done the club proud.
Next year we want more swimmers to achieve qualifying times and
attend the Summer States in January. Good luck for the summer
season!"
